Humans of New York- Sarah
For this assignment, I decided to read Venus’ story on Humans of New York. This was a longer piece, and I was slightly apprehensive about reading it at first, but I am so happy I did. It was a remarkable story. Though sometimes grim, I often found myself surprised by the twists and turns that this story had. This story was about Venus and how she took the reins of her own life while growing up. She goes on to describe how she went to college and met the “love of her life”, built a big family, and purchased a home. What some would say is the “dream” Halfway through the story though she reveals that her husband Tripp is completely abusive and is hiding something from her. This is when she receives a call from one of the many prostitutes Tripp has been seeing. After the confrontation, Tripp turns himself in and spends 45 years in prison. This is when Venus completely turns her life around and goes above and beyond for her 6 children. There are so many details in the story that make it as great as it is, and I highly recommend taking the time to read this story. The photos in the piece are a lot of old photos from Venus’ life including photos from college with Tripp, photos of their children, and family photos. Visually, this works well for the piece because at the core of the publication is a story about a family. The photos also show Venus’ love for her children and give a visual to who Tripp was. This human speaks to me for her strength. I’m happy I got to read this story. Venus’ story is about never giving up and it was so inspiring because she ultimately created a beautiful life for her and her children, something she was unable to have as a child. Despite everything she faced in her life she never gave up on what she set out to do. The purpose of this story is to inspire people by saying that no matter what you face in your life or the challenges that present themselves, you can overcome and create the best life for yourself. It’s up to you.
