Tree Reflection

I thought the readings and the video on trees were very interesting because oh how different each one was. “Poems About Trees’ in particular stood out to me because it honestly made no sense and went kind of all over the place. Really, it is not about trees at all, as you would expect it to be and is instead giving you a humorous outlook on the “boring” nature in which people typically write about trees. The end being “kids are stupid / $10” was quite a way to tie it altogether especially after saying something like “you anus look like a chicken pie.” Treeline, on the other hand, was very visually stunning and appealing and almost a bit emotional from the way in which trees are being described. I thought it was especially interesting when the point is made that in forests, where there are lots of trees, there is an imminent fear of death people have if they are hurt because there is no way of getting out easily. “Hermann Hesse on What Trees Teach Us About Belonging and Life” was more on par with what I expected of these readings. This line in particular stood out to me: “Nothing is holier, nothing is more exemplary than a beautiful, strong tree. When a tree is cut down and reveals its naked death-wound to the sun, one can read its whole history in the luminous, inscribed disk of its trunk: in the rings of its years, its scars, all the struggle, all the suffering, all the sickness, all the happiness and prosperity stand truly written, the narrow years and the luxurious years, the attacks withstood, the storms endured.”

  1. I liked the observation you made about "Poems About Trees" being less about trees and more about a commentary of the discourse around trees and nature. Most of the writing was nonsensical and random– the kids are stupid part struck me too and I wondered what was searched to create these lines. I also agree with your commentary on Treeline and the last reading. I found the film did a good job in evoking ethos and creating a connection between humans and trees. The line you selected from the last reading also creates a similar emotional reaction.
