Blog Post 4

I really enjoyed "How To Ruin Everything" by Watsky, and the Allie Brosh's blog. Though the two are different forms of media, they both work to display visuals that support the text. Watsky's excerpt from his novel, companied by the cinematic videography allow the viewer to become engrossed in his words. I most definitely prefer this video compared to his spoken word featured on TedTalk. The passing glimpses of students, various cars and hotels. It all feels so vulnerable and as if we are reliving those moments with him. Although the script comes from a written text, it is a great way to introduce viewers to his specific literary style. Watsky's TedTalk is more fast paced. He doesn't move around a lot besides pacing from each side of the stage. Usually there are visual elements to a TedTalk, but this one relied simply on Watsky's voice. While that may have been the purpose of excluded images, it made for a rather boring 17 minutes. Personally, I found it to be difficult to understand what he was saying because of how quickly he spoke. If there were visuals, perhaps things could have been slowed down. Although I am aware that is his style, I would have preferred a more traditional style of TedTalk. Allie Brosh's blog offers comedic relief with her drawings when addressing a serious subject. The doodles are light hearted and colorful. They don't offer much detail, but the focus relies on Brosh herself. Her included text is fairly short if there were no drawings. That's because a lot of what she has to say she draws instead of typing. So, without the doodles, there just wouldn't be the same amount of substance.
